The Ridgemont Lady Gophers’ basketball team took advantage of a cold shooting Triad team to take a 17-10 halftime lead Thursday.
The Gophers extended their lead to 24-10 early in the third quarter and held off a late Triad rally to win 51-43 at Triad High School.
“In one sense, it was a frustrating game because we handled the ball well with only 11 turnovers and had very good looks at the basket all night long,” said Triad head coach Jeff Merklin. “We ended up taking 69 shots and I really can’t recall a bad one. Unfortunately, other than when we had a nice run in the late third and early fourth quarter, we just couldn’t knock our shots down.”
The Cardinals cut the lead to 32-30 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Gophers were able to outscore them 19-13 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
“Ridgemont is well coached, and Saturday night gave a very good Elgin team a good ball game,” said Merklin. “They’re very good. Overall, it was a fun game to coach and it was another positive brick in the road we’re trying to build to get the program going again.”
