City residents continue to fall for scams as one resident lost $800 to a caller claiming to work for the federal government, while a city couple fell for a bogus loan offer.
On Thursday, a city woman told officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department her caller claimed he was with Social Security and that the victim had not filed her taxes for a couple of years. He claimed she would be arrested if she did not pay via Google Play cards over the phone.
She purchased the cards and called back, giving him activation information from the cards.
Friday, a city couple told officers they visited an online site claiming to be affiliated with Capital One Bank. After providing their information Thursday, they received a phone call from David, who had a foreign accent.
He wired their account a check for $852.76 but the bank determined it was forged.
However, the scammer now had access to their bank account which enabled him to leave them with a $499,526.27 negative balance overnight.
