A complicated construction project at West Liberty-Salem has been made all the more challenging in the aftermath of a shooting incident in a high school bathroom.
Construction crews already were busy tying up loose ends such as finishing painting and installing sound systems, but the Jan. 20 shooting raises additional security questions requiring the immediate attention of school board members and administrators.
Notably, about 75 already-installed classroom windows have to be fixed and retrofitted with acceptable egress. Students had to bust hinges on the new windows that only opened about six inches because of non-existent or insufficient emergency exit features.
Similarly, installing proper and uniform locks on all classroom doors is now an immediate priority, Superintendent Kraig Hissong told board members at a Feb. 21 regular meeting.
These updates come at the same time Ruscilli Construction crews are still trying to complete work from over the summer, Mr. Hissong said.
