Sludge from the West Liberty village sewer plant will be repurposed into fertilizer after village council accepted a proposal from the board of public affairs Monday in a regular council meeting.
Recycled sludge from the sewer plant will be dried and turned into recycled compost. The board of public affairs is responsible for funding and constructing the building. Recycling the sludge and turning it into fertilizer is a more cost-efficient method of handling the sewer plant waste, according to discussion during the meeting.
A residential telephone alert system is still a couple weeks away from being completed, council said Monday. The clerk’s office is working to verify addresses and phone numbers before the alert system goes live.
Notifications may be divided between the east and west side of village, council said, as certain notifications may apply to different parts of town. The notification system will be similar to the all-call system utilized by schools.
