Perry Hoey Hodies Jr., 85, of Lake Placid, Fla., and Bellefontaine, went to meet with my grandparents on Jan. 15, 2017; Charles Henry and Charlotte Hoy Hodes of Illinois, James A. and Annie Rachel Gordy May of Burkeville, Nottoway County, Va., where I was born on May 16, 1931, and parents, Perry Hoey and Annie Rachel May Hodies of Bellefontaine.
Survived by my wonderful and caring wife of over 61 years, Barbara Modafferi; blessed with two great sons, Perry III and Bruce, both of the Florida Keys; daughter-in-law, Sherri, and her family, Matthew Manahan and Brittanny (Josh) Porter and daughters, Josalyn and Sophia; granddaughters, Falon (Travis) Cooperrider and daughters, Aubrey and Emma, Monica (Adam) Hannah and daughter, Hazel; sisters, Patricia Allen, Charlotte Rhode and Nancy Parker; family member, Mike Mell; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by a very special aunt, Jessie Whitacre, and brothers-in-law, Carroll Allen, William Rhode and James Parker.
An Eagle Scout, Cub Scout, Den Chief, graduated from Bellefontaine Class of 1949, attended Miami University and Linotype School in English, Ind., leading to 41 years in the printing industry and retiring in 1996, after 25 years from Bellefontaine Examiner.
United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict with expert rifle and pistol medals when at Cherry Point, N.C., Marine Corps Air Base.
After living in Miami for over 15 years, where our sons were born, returned to Ohio. Being a gifted carpenter, built two fine Logan County homes. Enjoyed mowing on the tractor under my straw hat, acing Jeopardy questions on a nightly basis with toothpick in hand, worked crossword puzzles in ink with no mistakes and traveled to 45 of our 50 United States. An avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns.
A self-styled Indian Lake historian, giving interesting and informative talks both about history and growing up at a summer resort in Russells Point during my formative years.
Memberships: Elks Exalted Ruler, American Legion Post 173, Indian Lake Moose, Logan County and Indian Lake Historical Societies, USMC Reserves, Sunshine Horseshoe Pitching in Lake Placid. Attended St. James Catholic Church, Lake Placid.
Perry was surrounded by his loving family until the very end and will forever be missed, he changed the lives of so many, there are not enough adjectives to describe.
We have lost a loving husband, fantastic father and best friend, a wise and courageous father-in-law, a trusted brother, inspirational and strong grandfather, a “great” great-grandfather.
