Grateful for those who have helped her become a standout softball player, Brooke Lewis wanted to find a way to return the favor.
Lewis, who will be a senior at Indian Lake this fall, hosted a softball camp for girls in grades two through five this week.
All of the planning and organization was done by Lewis. The camp, titled “A League of Their Own,” took place at the Lakers’ varsity field. It was free of charge with the campers having the option of purchasing a T-shirt for a small fee.
“I noticed that a lot of girls don’t have people to help them when they are young,” said Lewis. “A lot of bad habits can be formed at a young age if you are not taught the right fundamentals. I want to help show them the right way to play the game.”
With her career at Indian Lake winding down, Lewis wants to ensure that the program remains strong well into the future.
“There is a Sand Lot program here at Indian Lake for baseball, but there is nothing here for girls,” said Lewis, a catcher who helped the Lakers win a district championship for the first time this spring. “I wanted to create something for girls interested in playing softball.”
