Profits would help fund adaptive playground
The Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District Board is considering a single event suspension of its no-alcohol-in-city-parks policy for an adult softball tournament that would also raise money for adaptive playground equipment.
While the six members present for Tuesday’s monthly meeting voted unanimously to explore the idea, the measure must receive final approval from Bellefontaine City Council.
“This isn’t going to be a regular thing, but we are exploring it as a possible fundraiser,” Parks Superintendent Kris Myers said after the meeting. “If the public tells us they don’t want it; we certainly aren’t going to try to push forward without support. We will take into account public feedback.”
The event being considered is an adult softball tournament Friday and Saturday, July 21 and 22, at Blue Jacket Park.
Money raised from the beer sales would go toward the ongoing effort to replace the Kaleidoscope Playground at Mary Rutan Park with adaptive equipment — a project that is expected to cost about $300,000.
“We saw this as a good opportunity to explore this as a possible fundraiser for parks projects,” Myers said. “But if the community support is not there, we won’t do it.”
