Two Chippewa area men were lodged on felony drug charges Wednesday evening as a result of a traffic stop in the Indian Lake area, where deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office recovered suspected heroin.
Jamie L. Caskey, 53, of 11378 Shawnee Path, Chippewa, Lakeview, and Louis E. Schoenberger Sr., 61, of 11044 Chickasaw Path, Chippewa, Lakeview, each was charged with felony counts of possession of heroin and tampering with evidence during the 7:20 p.m. stop.
A deputy reportedly observed the suspect vehicle driving in the area of north State Route 235 and the Indian Lake State Park Campground with only one headlight functioning and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The deputy said the vehicle continued into the Chippewa area and did not immediately stop. Instead, the suspect vehicle made turns onto Powhatan Path, and did not come to a complete stop at the stop sign at Eagle Path. The driver continued onto Shawnee Path and accelerated while the cruiser behind him had its emergency lights and sirens activated.
The vehicle eventually stopped in a driveway at 11113 Shawnee Path, and the deputy exited his vehicle.
When questioned about why they did not pull over sooner, the driver, Caskey, and passenger, Schoenberger, both replied “we were nervous,” deputies said. Caskey reportedly began crying and said he “panicked” and did not know what to do during the stop.
While speaking with the occupants, deputies observed a large amount of white powder covering the passenger seat of the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, deputies also recovered a black trash bag that contained baggies with white powder coating inside them.
The white powder field-tested positive for heroin, deputies said.
The pair was placed under arrest, and then Schoenberger also handed deputies a baggie with suspected heroin from his sock. They were transported to the Logan County Jail.
Caskey also was charged with a felony count of failure to comply with the order of a police officer. Deputies found that the license plate on his vehicle was registered to another vehicle, and he is facing possible charges for fictitious registration, expired registration and driving under suspension, with a report sent to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office.
