The Ohio State University Logan County Alumni Club recognized the county’s oldest known OSU Alumni member, Barbara Bradford, pictured first row, second from the right, during a Feb. 25 visit to Belle Springs Nursing and Rehab in Bellefontaine. She graduated from OSU in 1946 with a bachelor of science in education. Also gathered with Bradford are, from the left, seated: Jim Boyer, Carol Hartley and Jennifer Wilkins; and standing: George Wilkins, Charlotte Boyer, Kris Swisher, Janice Miller and Bob Day, Bradford’s nephew. Bradford shared many of her memories of her time at OSU, including using a sled to move her belongings down an alleyway to her new dorm in 1942; being late for class because students stopped in the Oval as Taps were played for the military during the war; and having a professor from Columbia University requiring all the class to sit on floor and not take notes. While at OSU, she enjoyed going to football games, square dancing with bussed in Navy recruits from Ohio Wesleyan and of course, learning, she said. Following graduation, she taught at military bases in Germany, Japan, Newfoundland and Spain. While in Europe, she traveled to China, Russia and Africa. After returning to the U.S., Barbara taught elementary school for grades four through six in Ashland, retiring in 1980. The alumni group presented the honoree with an OSU banner, certificate of distinction, roses, balloons and cake as signs of appreciation. (SCOTT COLEMAN PHOTO)
