It was a decision he knew he had to make, but stepping down after a 19-year run as Triad’s baseball coach did not come easy for Will Nichols.
“I’ve spent 19 years of my life at Triad,” said Nichols. “It was incredibly difficult to leave a place that has been so good to me. I received great support from everyone, from the administration to the players to the parents. I have a lot of great memories from the last 19 years.”
Nichols announced the decision to his players at the team’s awards banquet Monday. It came two days after Triad lost 5-4 to Newark Catholic in the Division IV state title game.
“What a great way to go out,” said Nichols. “It was very unexpected. I have never seen a team come together and play at such a high level like this team did in the tournament.”
