An Amish farmer got a nod of approval at the local level for his plan to use his 9.7-acre New Richland area farm as a small commercial chicken processing operation.
The Richland Township Board of Zoning Appeals voted unanimously Tuesday to grant Kenneth Fehr a conditional use permit for his 2999 County Road 105, Belle Center, property after the farmer explained his intentions and fielded questions from trustees and neighbors in attendance at the hearing.
“This spring we started thinking why not get a few extra meat birds — broilers — and maybe start selling them,” Mr. Fehr explained. “We thought this could be a small sideline business so when the boys grow up they could be part of that.
“Maybe when the boys are older we could be up to 100 birds a week or so, but we don’t want this to be full scale.”
