Hiring a new firefighters begins a process that can take months if not years to fully train the employee, Fire Chief Andy Fissel said Tuesday after Jeremiah Brisson took his firefighter oath.

Brisson of East Liberty was joined in City Council chambers by his family.
He will have to undergo firefighter training to meet the city’s standards may be as soon as December. But it could be three years before he finishes his paramedic training.
“We might be able to get him in earlier,” Chief Fissel said, “if we decided to send two guys at one time.”
