Daniel G. Dodds, 44, of 439 Colton Ave., was charged Monday with felony operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. He also was cited for stop sign violations, marked lanes violations, driving under suspension, no operator’s license, habitual alcoholic suspension and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Around 10:50 p.m., an officer of the Bellefontaine Police Department reports he was on patrol following a southbound van on Park Street which ran several stop signs before turning eastbound on Spring Avenue. The operator turned the van into the westbound lane before jerking the vehicle to the right. The officer tried to initiate traffic stop but the motorist continued onto Newell Street before stopping.
Upon speaking to Dodds, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol and order Dodds out of the van. He reportedly stumbled and twice missed the door with his hand as he tried to close it.
Abbreiviated field sobriety tests indicated he was impaired by alcohol and he was taken into custody. He refused to submit any samples for chemical testing.
Dodds has five prior OVI convictions since 2000. Therefore, under state law, officers can use extraordinary methods to obtain a chemical sample. A warrant to draw blood from Dodds for testing was signed by a judge and the motorist was taken to Mary Rutan Hospital to secure a blood sample.
It has been sent for testing.
Dodds was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
