Miami Township Trustees hope a special meeting Tuesday will address residents’ concerns a medical marijuana facility could locate within their community.
Fiscal Officer Thomas G. Weiskittle said nothing formal has been submitted to the trustees, but rumors of the possibility compelled at least one resident to raise the issue with a trustee.
The 7 p.m. meeting will discuss prohibiting or regulating medical marijuana cultivators, processors or dispensaries within the township.
Logan County Prosecutor Eric Stewart said he sent out a memorandum May 17 to all of the township trustees.
In it, he wrote:
“As you may know, House Bill 523 was passed last year and it gives townships the authority to prohibit or regulate medical marijuana cultivators, processors, or dispensaries within their townships. To help you navigate this process, our office has outlined below the legal options available to you.
1. The township can choose to do nothing.
2. The township can pass a simple resolution Prohibiting the Establishment and Operation of Medical Marijuana Cultivation, Processing, and Retail Dispensaries.
3. The township can pass a resolution prohibiting the establishment and operation of such businesses for a period of time (e.g.: 9 months, 1 year, 2 years …) to further review the laws, regulations and impact.
4. The township can pass a resolution to regulate such businesses.”
