Mary Rutan Hospital Crawfis Imaging Center, 120 Dowell Ave., Bellefontaine, now offers 3D mammography exams, an advanced type of digital mammogram and first of its kind for Logan County and the region, that offer better cancer detection, fewer call backs, minimal compression time and at a dose comparable to a conventional digital mammogram.
Large clinical studies have demonstrated the positive benefits of low dose 3D mammography exams, which include clearer images of dense breast tissue, greater likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors and greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities. This results in earlier detection of small breast cancers and fewer unnecessary biopsies of additional tests.
In conventional mammogram, overlapping tissue can hide breast cancers and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks.
“Mary Rutan Hospital is committed to providing the latest technology to detect breast cancers in the earliest stages, when treatment is most effective. By offering 3D mammography, we can more effectively pinpoint the size, shape and location of abnormalities. This leads to better detection and greater peace of mind for patients,” said Julie Klopfenstein, director of radiology for Mary Rutan Hospital.
One in every eight women will develop breast cancer. If caught early, the five-year survival rate is almost 100 percent. There are various guidelines suggesting when women should start screening and how often they should be screened, but all medical groups agree that screening saves lives. The American College of Radiology recommends an annual screening mammogram beginning at age 40 and these are the guidelines nearly all insurance companies follow.
