Shawn L. Knapp, 43, of Omaha, Neb., was charged with felonious assault and felony counts of domestic violence and disrupting public services related to an incident Thursday at A & E Campground, 3299 State Route 540, Bellefontaine.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the campground about 3 p.m. in reference to a 911 hang-up call. Deputies also were informed that the same phone number had called in a domestic complaint earlier in the day.
Upon arrival to lot 56, deputies observed a commotion coming from inside the camper and then Knapp came outside. Deputies said he spoke calmly to them about what was going on, but they observed that a woman, later identified as Knapp’s wife, was in visible distress and told deputies that he had tried to harm her with a knife.
Knapp handed deputies two knives that he had on his person.
His wife told deputies that Knapp had recently been released from jail in Franklin County and that he had been threatening her over the past week. That day, she said he had held a knife to her throat.
She told deputies she had tried to call 911 for help, but that the defendant took the phone from her after it started ringing.
EMS also responded to the scene to check the victim after she complained of pain in her chest, abdomen and back.
Knapp was placed under arrest and transported to the Logan County Jail.
