MARLAND |
An East Liberty man was sentenced to six years in prison for a drunk driving crash that claimed the life of a 20-year-old motorcyclist.
Edward Marland, 51, was sentenced Monday by Logan County Common Pleas Judge Mark S. O’Connor on an aggravated vehicular homicide charge and three counts of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Just after midnight Oct. 18, 2015, the defendant was driving northbound on State Route 292, north of East Liberty. At the Y intersection with County Road 12, the defendant failed to negotiate a curve and his sport utility vehicle went left of center.
Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol report the SUV hit James Long Jr.’s motorcycle, knocking it 120 feet from the impact site.
The victim was thrown into a field and died at the scene from blunt force trauma. He was headed home after visiting with his girlfriend.
A blood test revealed both the alcohol level and the marijuana metabolite levels in the defendant’s blood were nearly twice the amount considered by Ohio law as high enough to put the motorist under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
He had pleaded no contest to the charges and was found guilty by Judge O’Connor.
In addition to the prison sentence, Mr. Marland had his operator’s license permanently revoked and must complete three years’ post-release supervision.
