AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A South Carolina truck driver has been convicted of kidnapping a woman who escaped her captor in Ohio.
A federal court jury in Akron convicted 32-year-old Anthony Ingram on Thursday.
Ingram initially was charged with rape and kidnapping in state court. The case was dismissed after a 90-day speedy trial deadline was missed.
Officials said the dismissal resulted from a communication breakdown between the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.
Federal prosecutors subsequently charged Ingram with kidnapping.
The woman says she got into Ingram’s truck in Michigan in August 2018 when he offered her a ride. She says she was raped along the Ohio Turnpike and managed to escape at a Mahoning County truck stop.
Ingram’s attorney declined to comment.
Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 27.
