A Bellefontaine man was lodged Monday in the Logan County Jail after he fled from officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department.
Nicholas A. Morris, 37, of 408 Walker St., faces a felony charge of fleeing and eluding. He also was wanted on two felony warrants for possession of drugs.
Initial reports of the 9:40 p.m. incident indicate an officer on patrol spotted a sport utility vehicle commonly operated by the suspect in the area of Williams Avenue and Lawrence Street. The officer began to follow the SUV and observed it travel onto Euclid Street then to Florence Avenue.
The officer noted the SUV traveled a considerable distance by the time he turned westbound onto Florence. It then rolled through a stop sign as it traveled northbound on Troy Road.
Morris turned off the lights of the SUV and attempted to evade the officer by making frequent turns and speeding up. The officer traveled as fast as 71 mph to catch up with the suspect.
In the 800 block, Morris exited the SUV and ran off with the officer chasing on foot.
More officers responded to the area and began searching for Morris.
Within an hour, he was taken into custody.
Officers charge two with OVI
Kaila L. Snape, 31, of 450 Kristina Drive, Apt. 15E, was charged Sunday with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. She also was issued a traffic citation for failure to drive in the marked lanes of the road.
An officer on patrol around 1:30 a.m. observed a southbound car travel over the double yellow centerline of south Detroit Street in the 500 block and in the 1000 block.
A traffic stop was initiated enabling the officer to have contact with the driver. He observed that her eyes were bloodshot and glossy and her speech was thick and slurred. He also noted a strong odor of alcohol.
She was instructed to exit the car. She reportedly staggered as she walked from her vehicle to the front of the officer’s cruiser.
Field sobriety tests indicated she was under the influence of alcohol and she was taken into custody. She submitted a breathalyzer sample of 0.247.
She was released to a sober driver.
• Matthew D. Brann, 48, of Springfield, was charged with OVI, possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana drug abuse paraphernalia after a 8:10 p.m. traffic stop Saturday. He also was issued traffic citations for speeding and an expired license plate.
An officer on patrol used radar to track Brann’s sport utility vehicle traveling at 40 mph in a 25-mph zone of Ludlow Road. Brann was stopped at Blue Jacket Park.
The officer detected an odor of raw marijuana and Brann admitted smoking earlier in the day.
Loose marijuana and one-hit pipe were recovered from the vehicle.
Brann declined to participate in field sobriety test but submitted a breathalyzer sample of 0.101.
Hit-skip driver found at home
Richard D. Brenner, 79, of 309 S. Detroit St., was issued traffic citations for hit-skip and failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead after a 2:40 p.m. crash Sunday in the drive-up lane of Burger King, 2005 S. Main St.
His car hit the rear of a car operated by Mindy M. Baker, 44, of Sidney. Damage was minor.
Brenner drove off from the scene but was soon located at his residence. Baker provided a vehicle description and the license plate number to officers.
