City resident Joseph McKay was a loving father to his two sons, and he “had the biggest heart,” his mother, Susie Reasoner recalled Friday.
“He was never afraid to show how much he loved you. We talked to each other almost every day,” the West Mansfield resident said of her youngest son and one of her six children.
In early January 2015, Reasoner and her family experienced likely the worst day of their lives, when they learned that McKay had taken his own life. She received a phone call from one of McKay’s close friends inquiring if it was true that he had passed away.
“I called Joe over and over again and he wouldn’t answer his phone,” she said. “I drove over to his apartment, and then I saw the police tape across the door. And I thought, ‘How could this have happened? I didn’t see this coming.’
“I didn’t know he had been reaching out. It’s so important to know the warning signs of suicide.”
