LOGAN COLE |
West Liberty-Salem Schools continue dealing with the aftermath of the Friday shooting incident at the high school which left a student hospitalized and saw students flee the building through windows and run across muddy fields to safety.
Wednesday, class returned to a normal schedule after a delayed start Tuesday. However, counselors will remain available as needed. Likewise, law enforcement remains “available for added security,” the superintendent said.
“We cannot thank our community enough for your thoughts and prayers and I can speak for our staff that we are so proud to serve this community,” he concluded.
Staff lined hallways to welcome students as they returned Tuesday, and retired teachers were at school to start the day to reassure pupils as they came back.
“We want to thank other local school districts and agencies for sending counselors to be with our students and staff,” Superintendent Hissong said Tuesday. “Their support is critical in helping our staff and students, as it is needed throughout the day.
School officials reported 97 percent student attendance for Tuesday’s return to class.
“This is higher than our average attendance of approximately 95 percent. Thank you for believing in and trusting our staff with your child’s safety,” Mr. Hissong communicated to parents.
Therapy dogs were on site Tuesday to help students relax. Doughnuts were donated to the entire school, too.
Middle/high school students were shown a short video from Logan Cole, who continues to recover from his injuries.
Logan “wished his fellow students well on the return to school, thank them for their prayers, and shared his desire to return to school soon,” Mr. Hissong said.
