Joseph E. Detwiler, 92, of Marysville, died peacefully, Thursday, May 28, 2020, at his home.
A Liberty Township farmer on Shirk Road nearly all his life, he was involved in dairy farming for more than 45 years. After he left dairy operations, he continued with grain farming and raising livestock.
He was a big supporter of local FFA and Union County 4-H. He served on the Union Rural Electric Board from 1979 to 2009 where he was the board’s president for several years.
He also served on the Ohio Electric State Board from 1993 to 2000. He was a member of Raymond United Methodist Church and formerly a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and keeping up with agricultural trends with close friends. He was known as a hard-working family man with a sweet, compassionate and gentle heart.
He was born Dec. 14, 1927, on the family farm in Mt. Victory to the late Everett and Frances Seig Detwiler. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anna-Lou Jolliff Detwiler; his brothers, Bill Detwiler and Phillip Detwiler; his sister, Rebecca Tillman; and his loving companion, Jean Grooms.
He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (Larry) Lytle of Bellefontaine; four grandchildren, Logen (Laura) Lytle, Luke Lytle, Jenni (Marc) Ernst and Joe Pack; three great-grandsons, Jake, Connor and Nick; his sister, Judy Roberts of Marion; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life memorial gathering entitled, “It’s Time To Close The Gate” will be conducted in the fall. The date and time will be announced soon. Underwood Funeral Home is assisting the family.
