John W. Sprouse, 71, of Raymond, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus.
Born Feb. 26, 1946, in Charleston, W.Va., he was a son of the late John Edwin and Dorothy Josephine McLaughlin Sprouse. Also preceding him in death was a son, John Willis Sprouse; his brothers, David McLaughlin and Edward Sprouse; and foster parents, Harrison and Grace Meadows.
A graduate in the final class of Byhalia-York High School in 1965, he then served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam, where he was in the Military Police and a member of the River Rats. Over the years, he worked at Goodyear, DAB, Ranco and AVI.
John enjoyed taking road trips, his last going to Graceland in April and collecting coins. He truly loved being around children and always had a great story to tell anyone that would listen. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 603 in West Mansfield.
On Jan. 11, 1968, at the parsonage in York Center, he married his wife of 49 years, Ninnette Phipps and she survives. Also surviving is a son, Michael Sprouse of Raymond; sister-in-law, Marlene (Matt) Smith; brother-in-law, Marvin (Beth) Phipps; nieces and nephews, Jessica, Melissa, Russell, Jenny, Victoria, Stacy and Ronna; and several great nieces and nephews.
Chaplain James Taylor conducts a funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Wilson Funeral Home, Schnurrenberger Chapel, 222 W. Center St., West Mansfield, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Burial will follow at the York Cemetery in York Center, where military rites will be conducted by the Union County Honor Guard.
