Temporary chiller placed at sheriff’s office after air conditioner failure
Employees of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and inmates of the Logan County Jail this morning were hoping a temporary fix would aid in cooling down a recent “heat wave” experienced at the sheriff’s office and jail complex at 284 S. County Road 32 after the air conditioning system failed Friday.
Parts to repair the air conditioner have been hard to come by, and it is expected to be several weeks until the main unit can be repaired, Jail Administrator Greg Fitzpatrick said this morning. However, Tuesday evening, contractors and sheriff’s office employees assisted with the installation of a temporary chiller from Ohio Cat at the 45,000 square-foot facility.
The individuals worked until about 1 a.m. today to place and configure the chiller. A crane operated by the Logan County Highway Department was brought to the complex to lift the 15-ton unit from a vehicle. Contractors from Thompson Electric also worked on the temporary transformer.
While some mechanical issues were first experienced with the chiller, it was expected to be up and running by lunchtime today.
“We’re hoping things will get cooled down here soon,” Lt. Fitzpatrick said. “It’s been very difficult to cool the facility, since none of the windows open at the jail. In the upper level of one of our cell blocks, the temperature was 98 degrees two nights ago.”
