Bellefontaine Elementary School students had the chance Wednesday to observe behind-the-scenes of the picture book creation process and also to meet one of their favorite authorillustrators during her afternoon visit with each grade level.
Lindsay Ward, who lives in Peninsula, Ohio, with her husband and two sons, shared with the kindergarten through secondgraders about the steps involved in making her cut-paper illustrations and also how she receives inspiration for her humorous and lessonfilled stories.
Throughout much of this school year, the students have become familiar with her books, which include the Dexter T. Rexter dinosaur series, Please Bring Balloons and many others, through a donation of the books to the classrooms from the BES Parent-Teacher Organization.
While Ward read aloud Don’t Forget Dexter!, the pupils knew all the words and sang along during the dinosaur’s song. After her talk, the students clamored around the author, wanting to show her their drawings of the dinosaur character and to have their picture taken with her.
“She is like a rock star to them, and they’ve all been so excited to meet her today,” Associate Principal Denise Johnson said. “It’s been so fun to see their reactions and how well they know and love her books.”
Ward told the pupils she was raised in San Jose, Calif., and during her elementary school years, she enjoyed the chance to write and illustrate several books in her classes.
“My mom saved each of the books that I made, and while I loved creating the stories, I never dreamed it was something that I’d do as a career.”
