As tornado recovery efforts continue for students and staff at Indian Lake Schools, stories of endurance and determination are beginning to emerge from both pupils and faculty.
Throughout the academic year, Indian Lake Schools has emphasized the theme, “You Cannot Control the Wind, but You Can Adjust the Sails.” This sentiment has resonated within the school and community, especially in the face of recent challenges posed by the destructive March 14 tornado.
The story of Mr. Dave Coburn and Mrs. Lisa Coburn, Assistant Principal and Business Teacher at Indian Lake High School respectively, symbolizes the resilience and strength displayed by our community members.
The Coburns lost their home in the tornado, but despite the destruction that occurred personally, the educators were still focused on helping out other members of the Indian Lake family heal from the tornado.
On the evening when the tornado sirens sounded, Mr. and Mrs. Coburn found themselves navigating through the chaos of the storm while returning home from dinner with friends in Wapakoneta. Unaware of the extent of the destruction that awaited them, they encountered blocked roads and power outages — signs of the destruction left by the tornado.
Their trip home was littered with obstacles, including a downed tree obstructing their path.
Despite facing adversity, their immediate instinct was to offer to help at Indian Lake High School, where Superintendent Rob Underwood was organizing a temporary shelter and triage center.
Amidst the turmoil, their thoughts remained with their son, Chase, who was safely sheltered elsewhere. Their concern extended to their pets, as well.
Arriving home later that night, they were met with a scene of devastation. Their residence, a place of comfort for over two decades, was heavily damaged.
Undeterred, they navigated through debris to rescue their beloved pets.
The next day, the extent of the destruction became evident. The once-familiar landscape was turned upside down, with debris scattered and structures demolished by the strength of the tornado.
Despite the loss they endured, the Coburns have found comfort in the outpouring of support from the community, they said.
Their commitment to their students has not wavered, with both returning to school to offer support and guidance to those grappling with the aftermath of the tornado. Their resilience mirrors the ethos of Indian Lake High School, where the concept of “The Lake Effect” instills a sense of resilience and unity among students and staff alike.
As they embark on the journey of rebuilding their home and their lives, Mr. and Mrs. Coburn serve as signs of hope and resilience within the Indian Lake community.
