The Indian Lake Board of Education passed the athletic component of the district’s tougher new drug policy, but board members said Monday they are not finished with the project that began in the middle of last year.
“The existing athletic code is being amended tonight, but Steve and I both want to continue to work on the policy as it pertains to other student activities,” board member Gabe Wickline told fellow board members of the work he and Steve Spath are doing through the board’s policy committee.
‘The athletic piece was easier because there is already a code of conduct in place,” Mr. Spath explained after the meeting. “Now we want to move into co-curricular activities.”
Co-curricular activities are groups such as marching band, choir and other school activities that are both part of the educational process with an extracurricular component.
“It’s going to be a little more difficult, but we want to figure out how we can get it done,” he said, noting that the board and school administrators have begun looking at policies in place at other districts. “We want to make sure what we do is legal, especially as it affects the academic component.”
