Indian Lake school board members intend to implement a formal policy to address negative spectator behavior at sporting events, according to discussion Monday in a regular meeting.
Superintendent Rob Underwood cited a recent public notice issued statewide by the Ohio High School Athletic Association about the way parents should act during athletic events, as well as similar policies implemented by other school districts as reasons for exploring a spectator policy at Indian Lake.
The superintendent pointed out that student-athletes have to sit out the next contest if they get ejected from a game, and coaches are also suspended, have to pay a fine and go through a sportsmanship course, but no there is no policy in place to deal with negative fan behavior at sporting events.
Unruly fan and/or parent behavior is the, “primary reason Ohio has an alarming shortage of high school officials,” according to the OHSAA memo, an excerpt from which Underwood read to school board members at Monday’s meeting.
Board member Scott Staley said during the meeting that he recently had attended a basketball game and observed the type of negative fan behavior the school hopes to address with an official policy.
