A helicopter crew chief who flew on countless missions over the Kontum highlands was the fourth local Vietnam War veteran honored in a newly emerging national holiday.
John R. Horton Sr. of Zanesfield received a flag that has flown over the U.S. Capitol, Ohio Statehouse and Logan County Court Center during a Saturday morning ceremony to mark National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

He said he was honored to accept the award so that those who gave their lives will continue to be remembered.
“I’m no more special than anybody else who served,” Mr. Horton said. “I’m not representing me; I’m representing all the guys who can’t stand up because they aren’t here with us. I do it in their honor because if we don’t stand up for them, who will?”
