It was a perfect day for the annual “Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs” excursion to Indian Lake and the fish were biting.
The Indian Lake Elementary School fourth-graders joined members of the Indian Lake High School SADD Chapter to learn a new skill.
ILES Guidance Counselor Jill Onyema said even though fishing might not appeal to every student, it demonstrates constructive ways to keep busy as an alternative to trying drugs. Several students even caught multiple fish!
Professional fisherman Mike Defibaugh from Logan County also brought his special boat to show students. He told them that fishing kept him out of trouble and away from drugs as a younger man. He is now in his sixth year as a pro fisherman.
Local fisherman Jeff Whitsett also talked about the mussels in the lake clearing the water and causing the weeds to grow.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife and Indian Lake Outfitters provide materials such as current fishing rules and regulations guide, fish identification booklets and other support items.
Indian Lake Outfitters and Logan County Community Outreach Centers also help sponsor the event.
