Honda of America Mfg. associate volunteers made an impact on the Hilliker Y through a number of outdoor projects completed Saturday during their Week of Service initiative at the 300 Sloan Blvd., Bellefontaine, facility.
Around the grounds, approximately 30 Honda volunteers:
• Installed landscape tarp to eliminate weeds in the landscape, resulting in a reduction in man hours needed to maintain the landscape.
• Moved river rock into flower beds to cover the landscape tarp, which will eliminate the need and expense of annual mulching. Unlike mulch, the gravel will also endure heavy winds experienced at the Y.
• Planted various perennials, which, in addition to improving the overall appearance of the Hilliker Y, will eliminate the need and expense of planting flowers annually. The perennials will coordinate with an area that has already been designed by Logan County Master Gardener and Y member Karen Kennedy.
• Moved sand from one outdoor volleyball court to another. This allows for a deeper base for one volleyball court. This court will be utilized in the next few weeks as a practice site for a local high school volleyball team.
