It’s going to be a very merry holiday season at the historic Holland Theatre, with music and drama for all ages and tastes set to take the stage during December.
The month kicks off with The Elves and the Shoemaker at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. This charming musical retelling of the classic fairytale is presented by Windmill Productions with a cast of local adults and children.
Quartet The Bad Plus performs at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7. Combining avant-garde jazz with rock and pop influences, this quartet’s repertoire includes songs from Queen’s “We Are the Champions” to jazz standard “My Funny Valentine,” as well as innovative originals.
Now in their 21st year, The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries, with founding members Reid Anderson on bass and Dave King drums, along with Ben Monder on guitar and Chris Speed on tenor sax.
Next, celebrate a joyful Christmas with gospel legends Blind Boys of Alabama in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10.
Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has become one of the most and decorated roots music groups in the world.
The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized internationally as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in the 20th Century and created a new gospel sound for the 21st Century.
Finally, enjoy the sounds of the season with a free concert from the West Central Ohio Community Concert Band at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20. This is not a ticketed event; seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
Last year’s Christmas event with the popular community band was such a hit that they are returning to perform favorite tunes of the season. The WCOC Concert Band is celebrating its 30th season in 2022. Directed by Myles Bowers, the all-volunteer band includes amateur musicians, professional musicians, educators and students hailing from multiple Ohio counties.
