Indian Lake Middle School seventh-grade science is “going green” through an upcoming initiative.
Teacher Jana Core recently received an Operation Round Up grant from the Logan County Electric Cooperative for $3,500.
She is using the funds to purchase a Green Energy Machine.
The Green Energy Machine kits contain a 1000-watt solar panel, a 12-volt battery and Bluetooth data collection system. It will arrive later this fall.
Core learned about the Green Machine during summer training for the Ohio Energy Project which is sponsored by the Co-ops in Ohio, including the Logan County Co-op.
“I’m excited about the green machine because it ties into my curriculum with solar energy, technology, electricity and circuits, and weather, as we learn about atmospheric currents that bring weather patterns. It also ties mathematics into its use,” she said.
“The students in school now are already growing up in a society different from the way most of us grew up. This is an opportunity for students to look at alternative power sources that may be a larger part of their lives in the future.”
