Georgia gets grand gilt title GEORGIA BATES Georgia Bates, 10, of West Mansfield, improved upon last year’s performance at the Logan County Junior Fair market gilt show where she placed second. This year, she showed Ginger to a grand champion spot with her pink show whip that has a soft, gel handle that she likes. The soon-to-be fifth-grader at Benjamin Logan Elementary School is a daughter of Michelle Bates and Brad Bates. Although, she’s grown up with pigs, as her family raises show hogs, she also plays lots of softball for several teams and finished second in a tournament Sunday. She is a pitcher with a fastball and a changeup. She likes the fastball, she says, but the changeup is the most effective. She also likes social studies in school because she likes going back in time. “I would like to watch one of the NBA games with the Chicago Bulls,” she said. She also likes basketball. Veteran exhibitor shows top hog MORGANN FALER Morganne Faler said she’s waited 11 years to win the Logan County Junior Fair market barrow show. She went out with the blue ribbon and purple banner following Monday evening’s show in her last year of 4-H eligibility. She is a member of the Miami Valley Producers 4-H Club and a 2015 graduate of Indian Lake High School who just completed her freshman year at Bluffton University where she is an early education major. A daughter of Lyle and Holly Faler, she said her crossbred Hampshire entry was “sound” and “his structure” was appealing to Judge Bryan Vaughn of Wilmington. The pig’s dubious entry into the world gave him the name “Grim Reaper,” she explained. “Because it was about to die as a baby, but he came back to life, but it maybe was his brother, so who knows?” she laughed about the pig which was purchased from Darren Argabright.
