I am not a golf traditionalist, so I always look forward to the Ryder Cup because it comes with more of a raucous and energetic environment.
A reminder of why the Ryder Cup is so entertaining came Thursday during a practice round at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota.
According to media reports, Team Europe members Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan were struggling with a 12-foot downhill putt. A fan, later identified as David Johnson of North Dakota, gave McIlroy and Sullivan flak over their struggles to make the putt.
Johnson was then invited onto the green to attempt the putt. As he prepared to strike the ball, Justin Rose of Team Europe rushed in and laid a $100 bill next to the ball to increase the pressure.
Johnson was unfazed, draining the putt to the joy of the crowd.
Several of the European golfers later signed the $100 bill for Johnson.
It was a good moment for golf. Instead of trying to hush the heckler or get security involved, the European players found a light hearted way to handle the situation. Kudos to them.
