Winning photographer’s photo shoot a memorable event
DENNIS SCHAUB
There was some friendly competition going on in the Schaub family at Sunday’s judging of the open class photography show, but, ultimately, it was dad Dennis who took home the overall titles.
His entry in the In Flight category was named best of show color, and his Black and Orange category entry took reserve honors in the black and white division.
His wife, Carly, had a first place ribbon in the Indian Lake category taken while she and her sister were kayaking on the lake that was in contention for the best of show title up against her husband’s.
She joked that she, her husband and son, Luke each had entries in one category and they were concerned about beating each other, but none of them earne a ribbon in that category so it became a moot point.
“I love art,” Dennis said about his hobby. “Photography is the only thing I have time for,” he continued, and his interest in it has grown as he “takes photos anyway,” he explained.
The best of show entry was a deliberate one and a family affair. Luke released the balloon to which fishing line was attached and held by son, Alex, as shot after shot after shot was taken with the “freed” balloon, and Carly was driving them around finding just the right spot. The winning shot literally was the last one Dennis took and it was taken “on a whim,” he said.
Judge Trevor Jones, a former newspaper photographer whoworks as the photographer and digital asset manager for Ohio Northern University, told Dennis he liked the “detail in the silhouette” and that the “sunset wasn’t prominent” in the photo.
