The role the Logan County Fair Board is playing to help send better than 45 armed service veterans on a weekend bus trip to Washington, D.C., was a primary topic of discussion Wednesday in a regular meeting.
The volunteer group Vets to D.C. is set to take its first group of Logan County service veterans to the nation’s capital Friday and several fair board members will volunteer to help park cars Friday as the group prepares to depart, and again on Sunday when the veterans and their caregivers return home.
Board member Skip Jackson said the group has planned most of its trip from the fairgrounds, including having staged several meetings in the Grange Building. Mr. Jackson also said Wednesday that he is driving the truck and trailer that will store the veterans’ wheelchairs that will be needed as the group tours Washington, D.C.
A dinner was also put on Monday at the Grange Building for all the veterans going on the trip.
The trip costs a total of about $35,000 to put on, including travel and accommodations, Mr. Jackson said. However, the veterans on the trip travel free.
