Elizabeth Ann Cowman Thomas, a former resident of Bellefontaine, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2018, in Knoxville, Tenn., with her namesake granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Brandon at her side.
Mrs. Thomas was the widow of George Thomas to whom she had been married for 75 years. He passed away in May 2016.
They resided in Marion, Ind., and Sarasota, Fla., for many years, and following his death Mrs. Thomas moved to Knoxville, Tenn., to be near her daughter and granddaughter.
Elizabeth was born May 11, 1918, in Bellefontaine to Amalie and Gerard Cowman. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday with many family members in attendance. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class in Bellefontaine, Elizabeth attended Denison College (now University) and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
She moved to Marion, Ind., after her marriage. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed playing golf and reading, and was a member of many local organizations in Marion. She and George spent winters in Sarasota, Fla., and eventually moved there permanently in 2005.
Elizabeth leaves behind her daughters, Anne (John) Myers of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Sally (Jim) Haleen of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a son, George (Pam) Thomas Jr. of Columbus; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held later this summer in Marion, Ind. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to a favorite charity would be appreciated.
