Continuing to build and develop the quality staff that Benjamin Logan is known for must remain high on our priority list.
Why are you seeking office? My wife and I are both graduates of this amazing school district, and our three children are current students. I feel that it’s vitally important to have a parent’s voice on the board; I’m the only candidate offering that voice. All of that, and a parent’s point of view, make me the best candidate to continue in this office.

WL-S School Board
Name: Chuck Buck (i)
Age: 68
Current occupation: Semi-retired law enforcement
Previous political experience: 2 terms as trustee of Harrison Township (Champaign County); 8 years on the WL-S school board
What are the primary issues in your jurisdiction? Finishing the building project and looking after the budget ie: putting money back for major repairs such as roof and HVAC that may arise in the future. Maintaining a financially healthy school district is a concern of the district stakeholders. We as a board of education must listen to the voters.
Why are you seeking office? Several voters stated they were hoping I would run for the WL-S BOE again because they felt I brought a “down to earth” perspective to the board. They stated they would like for me to continue in that capacity.
What makes you the best candidate? Serving on the WL-S and OHP JVS BOE’s for almost eight years has given me valuable knowledge and experience that I can continue to use in my next term if re-elected. My 3 sons graduated from WL-S and my wife works locally as a RN. I have 26+ years experience as a law enforcement officer, which I draw from to make me a better school board member.

be to keep the school district in a financially sound position.

What are the primary issues in your jurisdiction? I am not running for school board because I see major issues that need to be addressed. My belief is that West Liberty-Salem is well run and well managed. However, completing the building project and the vote approving the removal of the drug policy are two issues currently affecting our district. Districts will always have issues. I feel that electing a candidate that can be trusted to make sound decisions is more important than the specific issues that currently face the district. Voters should vote for a candidate that has the morals and values that provide a foundation to make the best decision for the students, the teachers, the administrators, and the community that they represent.
Why are you seeking office? I have lived in the WL-S district for 18 years. During this period, I have seen time and time again what an outstanding school district this is. WL-S isn’t a great school by accident. It is great because people are invested and willing to give their time, resources and energy to make it an excellent place to send our kids. I am passionate about serving our community and doing my part to keep WL-S great. While I believe our district is one of the best, no district is perfect. As a board member, I will strive to continually improve the education we provide to our students, to build trust with the community by being fiscally responsible and transparent, and to build trust with parents by providing a safe and healthy environment that allows their children to become all God designed them to be.
What makes you the best candidate? In my many years in the district, I have made a priority of being involved in the school and community. I have coached and sponsored soccer teams, I have helped with and organized elementary field days, I have worked the concession stand, hosted team dinners, served on the prom committee, organized class parties and I am currently helping raise funds for the #tigerstrong field house. I am not afraid to work hard and through these activities I have built many relationships. I have a good understanding of what is important to this community and to our school. I also believe that as a woman, wife and mother, I can offer a unique perspective to the board. I have a BS in Social Work and my training in this profession has helped me become a good communicator, a good listener and a good leader. I am passionate about the WL-S school district and I am committed to serving it well. If you have any specific questions, please email me at [email protected].

What are the primary issues in your jurisdiction? The main issues at the school are the budget, spending habits, and resuming drug testing policy for student athletes as this would set a good example for our youth. Over the past two years the district has been spending money at a frantic pace and purchasing things they want instead of sticking to needs.
Why are you seeking office? I am running for this position to get somebody with a business back ground on there to really reign in the finances and give a fresh set of younger eyes on everything. I feel between my skill set and my outside the box thinking this will really help make changes at the school. If we don’t change our current habits the district will be forced to come and ask for more money from the community and I am afraid it will not be welcomed with open arms causing financial repercussions to the school district.
What makes you the best candidate? I come from the business world where I manage $3-4 million a year and about $20 million of liabilities, so I understand budgets (staying within them and setting them), forecasting issues and how to look for efficiencies to save money. I am used to making major decisions and implementing those ideas even when the decision is unpopular but it needs to be done. I have been giving back to the community as a volunteer baseball coach at two local schools the past 8 years and I am a board member for a non-profit organization which provides scholarships to local schools.

What are the primary issues in your jurisdiction? The primary issues we have in our district are issues that many districts are facing … how to prevent the rising drug problem in our schools and of course the infamous budget issues.
Why are you seeking office? I am seeking office to listen to my community and bring the issues the issues they may have that concern them to the table so there can be a discussion.
What makes you the best candidate? I feel I can be one of the best candidates for the position because I can bring a woman’s opinion to the discussion. There hasn’t been a woman on the board for many years. My family has multi-generational ties to West Liberty-Salem and the local community. I feel I have a good understanding of the community.
