Two people were charge Thursday after they allegedly tried to leave Dunham’s Sports, 2061 S. Main St., without paying for merchandise and then leading officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department on a high-speed chase.
Chila D. Hickcox, 30, of Springfield, was charged with failure to comply, possession of cocaine, theft, obstructing official business, receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of drug abuse instruments and served a Clark County warrant.
Brian L. Stoops, 53, of South Vienna, possession of cocaine, theft, obstructing official business, receiving stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of drug abuse instruments and served a Shelby County warrant.
At 3:45 p.m., officers spotted the duo in a southbound silver sedan at high rate of speed on Main. They pursued but Hickcox drove left of center into oncoming traffic to pass other southbound vehicles. Officers terminated the pursuit over safety concerns.
By 4:40 p.m., officers of the West Liberty Police Department had spotted the car and attempted to stop it. Hickcox drove north toward Bellefontaine.
A deputy with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit which continued eastbound on Gunntown Road to County Road 1.
There, law enforcement units were able to block Hickcox’s path and she drove into a ditch.
Both Hickcox and Stoops exited out of the passenger door and ran. Hickcox went into a cornfield and was apprehended by a deputy. Stoops also started to run but stopped when Bellefontaine’s canine, Boodik, was deployed.
A large amount of stolen items were found inside the car including chainsaws, generators, sweeper and clothing. Lawmen also found cocaine and a large amount of drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
Stoops began to overdose after admitted to ingesting heroin. He was transported by a Bellefontaine squad to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment and then lodged in the Logan County Jail.
Hickcox was lodged in jail.
An investigation continues into the case.
Woman allegedly kicks medic
Kathryn Anderson, 65, of 501 Gunntown Road, Lot 1, was charged Thursday with assault after she allegedly become combative with medic personnel of the Bellefontaine Fire and EMS Department.
At 1:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to Tumbleweed, 2241 S. Main St., on a report she was assaulting medics. She reported would act as if she fainted and then began kicking people trying to help her.
One medic was kicked twice in the shoulder. Medics were able to put her on cot and strap her in until officers arrived to put her in handcuffs.
She admitted to drinking alcohol that day.
She was arrested and lodged in jail.
