James M. Castle, 49, of 600 Lincoln Boulevard, Russells Point, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash and operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs following a hit-skip crash that occurred Saturday afternoon.
Officers of the Russells Point Police Department were dispatched about 1:30 p.m. to the area of Lincoln Boulevard and U.S. Route 33 in reference to a crash.
Elise McCoy, 47, told officers she was driving a westbound sport utility vehicle on U.S. 33 when Castle ran the stop sign at Lincoln Boulevard and U.S. 33. She said Castle’s vehicle struck her SUV, and continued across the road and struck the stop sign on the opposite side of the road, drove through the grass, and back on to Main Street. No injuries were reported.
While en route to the crash, officers were advised that the at-fault vehicle was attempting to flee the area, heading west on Main Street.
The suspect vehicle was eventually located by a witness at U.S. 33 and west Wilgus Drive.
While speaking with the driver, Castle, officers detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage and noted the defendant was unsteady on his feet. They also observed cans of beer in his vehicle.
Castle submitted to a portion of the field sobriety tests and failed. He declined to continue with the tests, so he was placed under arrest and was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he refused to submit to a breath test. He also was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign.
Castle’s vehicle sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.
