Thomas R. Hoskins, 35, of Bellefontaine, was charged Wednesday with OVI and cited for failure to control and leaving the scene of a crash.
He was driving a van westbound on Sandusky Avenue around 1:10 p.m. and his brakes locked up and as he approached Garfield Avenue to avoid colliding with other vehicles he veered left, hit a crosswalk sign and post knocking the post across Garfield into the now vacant Broken Spoke, 511 Garfield.
Hoskins’ van came to a rest in the Broken Spoke parking lot and he proceeded to drive off westbound with witnesses following him.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department followed the witness leads and tracked the van to 321 Lawrence St. Hoskins came out of the residence and admitted to driving the vehicle.
Suspicious Hoskins had been drinking alcohol, officers conducted sobriety tests which showed the driver was impaired by alcohol. He provided a breathalyzer sample of 0.147.
He was released to a sober friend.
