Dr. Jack Hagan Hess I, D.O., 88, passed away December 4, 2019, in Bogota, Columbia. He was born November 10, 1931, to the late Edwin A. and Marguerite F. (Harvey) Hess. He was also preceded in death by a son Dan Hess; a great-grandson, Matty Cox; brothers, Edwin A. Hess and Harold Hess; and sister Marilyn Rosenthal.
Jack graduated from Columbus North High School, and then served in the United States Navy as a corpsman on the Navy hospital ship the Haven. Upon returning from the Navy, he attended The Ohio State University, and graduated from the School of Optometry in 1961. He then set up private practice in Bellefontaine, Ohio, where he practiced until his retirement in 1995. After retiring, he lived in Homestead, Florida; Bogota, Columbia; and Poinciana, Florida.
Jack is survived by his wife of 36 years, Helena Castro Hess; a daughter, Becky (J.R.) Cronkleton, a son, Jack (Chris) Hess II; grandsons, Jack Hess III, Brandon Hess, Matthew Cox, Nathan (Peggan) Cox, and Kyle Nevers; great-grandchildren, Alexus Cox, Jack Hess IV, Easton Hess, and Elisabeth Hess; step-daughters, Ana Maria Mendoza and Luz Helena Mendoza; and many nieces and nephews.
Fr. Shawn Landenwitch will officiate a graveside service on Saturday, July 16, at 11 a.m. at York Center Cemetery, near the intersection of State Routes 739 and 47, Union County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Logan County Cancer Society, in care of the Mary Rutan Foundation, 205 Palmer Ave. Bellefontaine, OH 43311.
