The Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities Board discussed at their Thursday evening meeting the extensive repairs needed at the Discovery Center, 1973 W. State Route 47.
Three engineering companies have evaluated the deterioration of the building, which is more than 50 years old and shows many signs of wear that will need to be repaired.
Areas of repair identified by the engineers include: Spalling or the “popping off” of the brick’s face and cracking is prevalent throughout the building; roof leaks need repaired and gutters fixed to prevent further or future damage to bricks; brick-covered columns are in very poor condition and need replaced; steel posts in columns need inspected and potentially replaced because they are a major support to the roof; and steel lintel beams over windows, doors and wall openings have extensive deterioration and will need to be replaced.
Members also thanked the community and donors for their support of the 30th annual chicken barbecue fundraiser this month, with record sales this year of 3,240 chicken dinners sold. The proceeds from the event support the “Come Play at the Peak” accessible parks project.
