Two pink demolition derby cars that have been the source of much contention in the village of Zanesfield were removed from the centrally-located village lot at noon Friday.
Property owner Matt Straker placed the first of the two vehicles on the lawn of 2799 Sandusky St. just shy of a year ago and referred to it as an artistic display. The timing of the display coincided with a dispute between the property owner and the village council regarding how a waterway beneath the structure on the property would be handled.
Mr. Straker said he bought the property in 2014 to settle a lawsuit in which both he and the village were named and avoid additional legal fees for both parties. He believes village officials promised assistance in addressing the waterway, but village officials have said no such promises were made.
The village, however, is in the process of completing a drainage project that encompasses the whole village and west into Jefferson Township. The section in the middle of town, over which Mr. Straker’s property sits, will be the most expensive portion of the project to undertake and likely will not occur for at least several years.
