Author pays tribute to mother, hometown in final book
A former Bellefontaine Examiner paperboy is wrapping up his Fanfare for a Hometown collection with the upcoming release of his latest book, Perfect in Memory: A Son’s Tribute to His Mother, slated for Sept. 1.
The third installment in the three-part series, the book delves into the life of author Dr. Rick Niece’s late mother, Dorotha Jean “Dodie” Niece, and flashes back to his family’s fond memories of their time spent in DeGraff during the 1950s and 1960s.
To celebrate the conclusion of the series, a free electronic copy of the first book, Side-Yard Superhero, can be downloaded Aug. 16 and 17 on Amazon/Kindle, representatives of Five Star Publications report.
It was during Dr. Niece’s early years that his mother impressed upon him a love for writing and reading, which has carried through to the completion of this collection for the longtime educator and recently retired university president.
“Mom instilled in us the sacredness of the written word,” said the 1964 Riverside High School graduate, who also is a son of former DeGraff/Riverside band director Lewis “Lewie” Niece.
“In the photo on the book cover, she’s reading a book to me when I was about 2 or 3 years old. I imagine there was classical music playing on the phonograph in the background as well.
“In all my growing up years, she consistently had a book with her. That’s a commonality that we shared.”
