Attendees at Monday’s Memorial Day observances in DeGraff witnessed a special ceremony usually reserved for funerals of military veterans.
The program featured a ceremonial folding of an American flag dedicated to the late Donald Roach, a veteran of the United States Army who served in Germany in the 1950s.
Properly folding a U.S. flag includes 13 specific steps, each with its own significance, explained Denny Brown, as the flag was folded.
A ceremonial flag folding typically is reserved for funerals of military veterans, or on national holidays such as Memorial or Veterans day.
However, an armed services veteran did not necessarily have to have died in conflict in order to have a ceremonial flag folded in their honor.
“It’s not just for those veterans that have died in conflict,”
Brown said. “Any one of the veterans today could have a flag folded at their funeral.”
