A Bellefontaine couple who trashed a rental property after a forced eviction were ordered to pay $8,129 restitution as part of their sentence for felony vandalism.
Charles Smith, 37, and Jessie Smith, 26, appeared for sentencing Monday before Logan County Common Pleas Judge Mark S. O’Connor.
The two were charged in connection with a March 2015 incident in which they severely damaged a 4256 County Road 18 they rented from Valarie and Jeffrey Latimer.
Windows were broken; door frames were damaged; and piles of trash were left outside the residence. The couple also allegedly removed copper pipes, a water heater and other items of value. They were originally charged with felony theft, but prosecutors dismissed the theft charges in exchange for guilty pleas to vandalism.
In addition to the restitution both were placed on three years community control and must pay court costs and lawyer fees. Mr. Smith was also ordered to spend 30 days in jail while Mrs. Smith must complete 40 hours community service.
