Pecan caramel crunches its way to the top
All three judges of the open class ice cream freeze off were blown away by West Mansfield resident and best of show winner, Lauryn Elliott’s pecan caramel crunch ice cream on Saturday.
“That’s a good one right there,” said Julia Hunt, a Dairy Queen employee who served as judge.
This is Ms. Elliott’s fourth year participating in the ice cream freeze off.
“It’s exciting,” said Ms. Elliott. “I’ve never won grand champion of anything.”
Ms. Elliott attended the Columbus Culinary Institute and has been participating in the ice cream freeze off ever since she finished.
“It must’ve had a nice texture,” she said. “The pecans gave it a nice crunch, while the caramel gave it that smooth taste.”
Winning reserve grand champion was 14-year-old Landon Armentrout, a freshman at Benjamin Logan High School, with his peach ice cream.
“Mine was different,” said Landon. “Most people go with strawberry or raspberry, but I went a different route.”
Landon has been participating for roughly four years and won two years ago for his pumpkin ice cream in the ice cream with fruit category.
“It’s my favorite category,” said Landon. “There’s so many different things you can do.”
Ice cream was opened up to be sampled once the judging was complete.
