Trustees of the West Mansfield Conservation Club reported Monday they are taking steps to make the club’s shooting range as safe as possible while still waiting for the National Rifle Association to inspect the grounds.

Three members of the nine-member board of trustees attended the Perry Township Trustees meeting Monday evening as West Mansfield Council also took up a discussion on the range and the safety hazards it imposes on village employees.
The trustees who attended the Perry Township meeting handed out information that said they have “temporarily closed the gun range until issues are resolved;” changed leadership and will elect a new president of the board; are awaiting an NRA inspection of the range; and “have changed the rules of the gun range and are no longer allowing certain guns/ammo/targets that were causing some issues and potential dangers.”
They also submitted a more detailed four-page draft of rules that would ban use of rifles and large-caliber rounds on the range. Those rules will be submitted as part of the NRA inspection, the club trustees said.
